Merritt Island Pottery Bowl

Beautiful Florida pottery by Mel Casper, Merritt Island Pottery
Measures approx. 4" diameter and 2" height.

I've found and a few nice Merritt Island Pottery pieces over the past few years.  They are distinct in their glazing with a very clear signature. There is a lot written about Mel Casper and Merritt Island Pottery. Here is an interesting article from Orlando Sentinal from 1986.  He seemed like quite a character. Mel died in 2001 so his pieces are becoming more rare as collectors scoop them up.

Signed White Raku Round Vase

Gorgeous white raku vase with amazing markings. Signed on bottom but I haven't yet been able to identify the mark. Obviously a very able and experienced potter.

$175

E&C Challinor Antique White Bowl

Beautiful crazing on this antique white ribbed bowl. I looked up the mark and it appears to be  c.1891. There is a small crack on the rim about 1" long. It's not raised but smooth to the touch. It does not detract from the beautiful bowl.

Small weed pot vase

I love the closed form of weed pots. This cute one has a matte blue glaze on the bottom and an earthy green glaze at the top with some blue specks. The bottom is unglazed.  It's signed as shown in photo but I can't make out the mark.  Measures about 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" (I don't have it with me to measure exactly but hopefully you can get a sense of its size from it being held in my hand.) Cute.

Green Crackle Bowl

Very nice old bowl with crackle glaze. I didn't do a great job with the photos. I will take more with a straight on shot.  Measures about 10" round and 4" deep.

Amorphic Painted Vase

Don't the last two photos look like a tattooed shoulder?  Such a unique pottery piece. I believe it's porcelain.  Signed on the bottom but can't make out the signature.

Measures approx.  14" x 8"

I'm now hooked on mid-century studio pottery.

The DeSimone line of pottery was created by Sicilian aristocrat turned artist, Giovanni DeSimone.  He studied extensively under famed artist Pablo Picasso, whose influences are evident in the bright colors and simple lines of  DeSimone’s ceramic art.  His original, handmade ceramic designs and inspirations now live through the work of his daughters.
